Students in a freshman English class at Southview High School showed their passion and commitment to diabetes awareness by raising $5,000 during their School Walk for Diabetes campaign this year.

"I was amazed at how well my students responded to School Walk for Diabetes," said Mary Jo Soroka, Southviews School Walk for Diabetes coordinator. "I never realized that diabetes touched so many of my students lives."

Soroka wanted diabetes education to resonate with her students, so throughout the semester she asked them to create awareness brochures and write papers about diabetes. She incorporated School Walk for Diabetes fund raising into her grading system, encouraging them to recruit friends in other classes for extra credit.

On the day of the event, she learned that students had gone the extra mile by inviting family, friends, and neighbors to spread the word about diabetes. Together, Sorokas 30 students raised $5,000.

"I think this experience is one that the students will never forget," said Soroka. "The American Diabetes Association made this very easy for us and I look forward to working with them again."
